It’s September, so summer must be over. I’ll be back to posting here regularly soon, but I just wanted to put a few events on your Home Savings Bank Art calendar.
Sunday, October 23, 2011 — I will be leading a bus tour to some of the San Fernando Valley Home Savings sites, in conjunction with the Autry National Center’s Pacific Standard Time exhibit. Information on how to make a reservation here.
Saturday night, December 10, 2011 — I will be speaking about the Home Savings work in conjunction with the Pacific Standard Time exhibit at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona–newly relocated into a former Home Savings. May 5 – June 17, 2012 — Home Savings bank locations featured in a gallery show at the Grand Central Art Center, Cal State Fullerton, organized by Concepcíon Rodríguez and Wendy Sherman. I am helping them with the research and the exhibition catalog.

Here are some photos of the former Home Savings in Riverside, CA, which has a mosaic by Susan Hertel and Denis O’Conner depicting Southern California’s “parent” Washington Navel orange tree that was planted in Riverside in 1873.

I am in tears having found your blog! My father, Arlin H. Eddington was hired by Ahmanson around 1961 and became a Home Savings Corp. V.P. over construction. He was the man on the ground, overseeing the construction of all of the buildings (including the Palm Springs mall (1966-68) and spoke often of the artwork by Millard Sheets. He retired around 1980 and passed away in 2002. I’ve been planning to go out to L.A. to try to document the old Home buildings for our own personal history. Thank you for doing the work for me! I look forward to hearing you speak in Dec. I am bringing my daughter out in June to visit our old Home Savings-owned home in PS “The Willows” http://www.thewillowspalmsprings.com/ now a bed and breakfast and would love to get that Home location list from you.
