Please change these items in your copy of the book:

Cover photograph is from 1871, not 1881.

Chapter 5: George Caleb Bingham’s painting is more often called Jolly Flatboatmen in Port, and there seems to be one African American, as the text states, not two, as the caption suggests.

Chapter 7: Chauncey and Oliver Filley were cousins, not brothers.

Chapter 8: Lincoln University was founded by the 62nd and 65th U.S. Colored Infantry; members of the 63rd were not involved.

Chapter 10: Rutherford B. Hayes had been inaugurated on March 3, not March 4, as the text implies.

Chapter 10: It is Adolphus, not Augustus, Busch.
